LAFF features Tom Bradley Documentary & LA Muse Section

The Los Angeles International Film Festival identity features artist Noah Davis.

LAFF: The Los Angeles International Film Festival kicked off Wednesday night with director Paul Weitz’ film "Grandma," starring Lily Tomlin. LAFF continues through June 18 with extensive film premieres, events and special screenings, including the world premiere of Lyn Goldfarb and Alison Sotomayor’s documentary on Tom Bradley:  "Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race." Tix to the June 14 documentary screening are gone, but there are a few free tickets for the June 16 screening.

ADD: The LA Muse section features ten world premiere films that are quintessentially Los Angeles. This year the fiction and documentary films include:

Aram, Aram by director Christopher Chambers
A Beautiful Now by director Daniela Amavia
Can You Dig This by director Delia Vallot
Day Out of Days by director Zoe R. Cassavetes
The Drew: No Excuse, Just Produce by directors Baron Davis and Chad Gordon
The Escort by director Wil Slocombe
Flock of Dudes by director Bob Castrone
French Dirty by director Jesse Allain-Marcus
No Más Bebés by director Renee Tajima-Peña and
Weepah Way For Now by director Stephen Ringer

ID NOTES: The 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival identity was designed by Pentagram’s Emily Oberman and team. For this year’s Festival, LA artist Noah Davis was commissioned and he uses "dots of color in a sea of black, evoking the lights of L.A. and the moon at night as seen from the hills around the city." Last year LAFF brought in Ed Ruscha through LA based Ignition.

Last Remaining Seats 2015

BobMitchell

The late Bob Mitchell playing the Orpheum's Mighty Wurlitzer in May, 2009.

At LA Observed, Kevin Roderick posted "Your fashion and dining guidance for Last Remaining Seats 2015," the sixth post offering ideas on what to wear, and where to dine, so viewers can take in the LA Conservancy's summer screening series with alternative style. I thought of it to use here, but it ends up taking a dignified tour of blogs that cover downtown well.

Random passages from previous years after the jump.

Keith Olbermann on Stan Chambers

"He more or less invented, on the fly, live television coverage of breaking news," says Olbermann, on what becomes an emotional remembrance. Chambers was 91. More at LAO.

Grammy Foodie FYI

Martin

STAPLES Center Executive Chef Joseph Martin at GRAMMY VIP preview.

By María Margarita López

Fresh. Savory. Bacon-y. Tender. Hearty. Spicy. Sweet. The tastes hit 11, if Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel were to report from the VIP suite on GRAMMY night. Food scribes had a preview of the delicacies on Tuesday, touted and hyped as exclusive recipes for the 2015 GRAMMYS by STAPLES Center Executive Chef Joseph Martin. He rolled out presentations like Bacon Caviar Dip with Sweet Potato Chips; Nueske’s Wrapped Jumbo Prawns with peppered grits and Worcestershire sauce; or the California Beet, Red Quinoa & Goat Cheese Salad during behind-the-scenes tasting of the VIP Suite Menu. The 57th Grammy Awards are tonight. LL Cool J will host the show for the 4th consecutive year.

Cliftons

Just in time for the big block party on Broadway, the Clifton's sign was just lit. A VFaL operative was standing by with a Mini iPad. Except to see more tonight from Bringing Back Broadway, and anyone with a sense of downtown Los Angeles history.

Ponce in Venice

Levi Fonz Ponce nearing completion of his new mural in Venice, California.

Pacoima Represented: Venice-based photographer Jonathan Alcorn sends along his shot of this new mural on Ocean Front Walk and South Venice Blvd by Levi Fonz Ponce sponsored by The Paradise Project. Being Venice, the image supports a mission of "celebrating and connecting diverse independent free thinkers who are deeply spiritual about science, nature, and our universe." Albert Einstein, Baruch Spinoza, Alan Watts are some of the thinkers in this piece designed by Peter Moriaty. Other segments were done by co-artist Matt Dean.

Coachella's Shady Lane Mural on Artbound

Corner_shadylane-2

Shady Lane Mural

"There's a street in Coachella that uses a long set of murals as a cultural beacon that rose from a neighborhood. Its origin dates back to the beginning of the California mural movement, and conceivably sends a defiant statement from local artists that they are also a source for the region's creative reputation, not just the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival."
