From July, 2007: Huell Howser took a visit to Blooms General Store in the Arts District, after the passing of Joel Bloom. Howser's gift was not just finding stories, but connecting with people who understood the stories of their neighborhoods.
The longtime host of KCET series "California's Gold," died last night of natural causes. He was 67.
John Lee Hooker revisited his 1966
cover of the Rudy Toombs penned song "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One
Beer" in this video film at 544 Mateo, near Palmetto. The Downtown Vid Pick was spotted by Arts District
local Tim Quinn, who suggests the filming took place around 1999. No matter. The song is a triple shot Arts District anthem to dance away 2012.
When
asked by KCET’s Juan Devis what I thought about a guest editorial
spot to expand the conversation on street art and murals. I said it was a great idea. Having Cheech Marin kick it off was fortunate timing,
and the series within a section offered points of view tapped from a
brain trust of academia, artists, advocates, and two well trained
emerging journalists driven to look at art at street level. The 2012
guest editorial series ended with a second post by G. James Daichendt
recapping the best street art stories of the year. Talking to each
author in preparation for their contribution was enlightening.

The Los Angeles Clippers risked humilation by arriving to Staples Center
donning hideous chic. After the big win over the Denver Nuggets, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul wore them during after-game
press conference. In-your-face fabrics is the new way to diss a beaten opponent.
This must be what the Mayans warned us about. The ugly sweater is fashion doomsday that gained traction in 2012. There was a surge of Angelenos willing to wear thick outwear heavy with seasonal hieroglyphs, a trend that ends with a severe morning-after.
It is not reserved to hunting and wearing late 20th Century fashion artifacts. San Diego's Tipsy Elves sells new designs, reports the LA Times. "Bestsellers include reindeer dancing in a conga line and a multitasking
Santa spelling out 'Merry Christmas' in the snow as he relieves himself."
Jingle Bell Rock (2012) Music Center Holiday Celebration performers.
L.A. County Holiday Celebration sent out a video with singers and dancers joining in a lip dub on the Music Center Plaza. The annual tradition is Monday, Dec. 24 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. In 2009 I wrote:
The event began in 1960 as "The Christmas Program," taking place at the Sports Arena in Exposition Park. It moved to the Music Center when the facility opened in 1964. In
fact,County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, who represented the 2nd District
from 1952 to 1992, led fundraising for the facility only on the
condition that it be open to the public, for free, at least one day each
year.
The 53rd Holiday Celebration: The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (135 N. Saw it at LA Observed. Had to nab it. In Little Tokyo, Brittni Paiva plays "Take Five" on four-string ukulele. Dave Brubeck passed away Wednesday. He would have been 92 today. Previous Brubeck Downtown Vid Pic saw the quartet float over Los Angeles freeways. "Blue Rondo A La Turk"
An inventory of 14 car products begins a business partnership between Snoop Dog and Mr. Cartoon. "This is a great day, to have someone I admire as an artist who is also a
fan of the product, join my company in this capacity," says Cartoon in a press release. Dog and Toon plan to tap into a network of celebrities and car culture to sell "waxes, polishes, spray detailers, interior cleaners and conditioners, and a trio of innovative tire shines."
